Checks, the trend of the moment

There's no getting away from it this winter: next to all the groovy prints, checks are the trend of the moment. When it comes to fashion, the seventies inspire us tremendously at the moment, and that includes checks!

Chequers are found in different designs, large and small, colourful and classic patterns. Plaid can be worn sporty, chic and super feminine. No pattern is as versatile as the plaid pattern. So there's plenty to choose from!

Where does the plaid pattern come from?
The tartan is the best known and oldest tartan. One of the oldest descriptions of a plaid pattern dates back to 50 BC. In those days, the more colours you wore in your tartan, the higher your rank. Ordinary citizens wore one colour, the king had seven colours, a priest six.

But anyway, back to the present. Nowadays, fortunately, it has nothing to do with rank. It is impossible to imagine the fashion world without the tartan trend. Big brands like Christian Dior and Chanel have put the plaid trend back on the map in the last few years and it has become an ongoing trend. Initially mainly for a classic look, but nowadays you can go all out with the plaid look.
For the classic plaid, threads of 100% virgin wool, lambswool, cashmere (goat), alpaca or camel are still used. A classic check is always woven, but nowadays we also see knitted and printed checks. The yarn is pre-dyed in woven plaid fabrics.

What types of plaid patterns are there?

1. GLENCHECK

Glencheck is one of the most popular lozenge patterns. What is recognisable about this pattern is that the squares of different sizes come together in a harmonious square shape. The different sizes of the squares are clearly visible. In our collection this is mainly visible in our trousers. These trousers can therefore be worn both casually and chicly. This season, we also have a suit with the Glencheck pattern in our collection.

2. PIED-DE-POULE

Pied-de-poule is a classic checked pattern that can be recognised by its two-coloured, rectangular design. The corners of the checks are connected by small vertical and horizontal extensions at right angles. The pied-de-poule motif first appeared in the West in the 1930s. Literally, pied-de-poule means chicken foot. In the Netherlands, pied-de-poule is also called the windmill motif, in England it is called houndstooth, cock's tread or crow-foot design and in Germany, Hahnenschritt. Pied-de-poule of course sounds much more chic and fun. We use this pattern mainly for our blouses.

3. BLOCKWORKS

Block prints look almost like a graphic pattern. The expressive print is expressed in straight, usually large lines. Mostly two-coloured yarns are used for this, which provides more contrast or detail, but multi-coloured block checks are also very trendy. We use this pattern mainly in our blouses and dresses.

4. TARTAN

Tartan is best known as the "Scottish check". That's where it all started, now we know this tartan in different patterns and colours. We use it mainly in our traditional worker's blouses. Thanks to yarns of different colours, the tartan check looks very colourful, while the symmetrical arrangement of the checks creates a harmonious whole.

How do you combine a checkered pattern?
A checkered pattern in your outfit is always a good thing. But we can imagine that you find it difficult to style it in the right way. Here are some tips for the best look.

o Large checks are of course more striking than small ones. Let the print steal the show and keep the rest of your look quiet.
o Small checkered pieces can easily be combined for any occasion. In our collection we have beautiful checkered blouses that you can wear over your T-shirt and jeans. A checkered garment goes well with an outfit in the same hue and less expressive colours.
o If you're going for a complete outfit in the same checkered pattern, choose contrasting accessories or keep them in the same colours for a calm look. For example, we have dresses in plaid, wear black tights with ankle boots or high boots in a dark colour.
o You can perfectly draw attention to yourself with one eye-catching checkered pattern, while keeping the rest of your outfit quiet. Choose a colour that returns in the pattern or a striking shade for a more daring outfit.
o Be more daring! Combine different plaid patterns for an eclectic look. Choose the same colours to keep things calm or go for colour blocking if you want to make a statement.
